A southwest Iowa man has been charged with first degree murder in the death of a toddler in his care.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says 22-year-old Colby Puckett of Pacific Junction was arrested and charged Friday. They say he caused major head trauma to 13-month-old Aliyanna May on February 1st.

The complaint against Puckett says he called 911 claiming Aliyanna had fallen off of a bed and was unresponsive and not breathing. EMS responders arrived at 1101 Lincoln Avenue in Pacific Junction and realized the child needed immediate emergency care. She was taken by air ambulance to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where she died the following day.

Doctors at UNMC said Aliyanna had extensive injuries to her eyes and brain that were consistent with abusive head trauma, not a fall.

During the investigation Puckett admitted to the abuse and said he called a third party after causing the injury, and before calling 911, even though the child was in obvious medical distress.

Results of an autopsy done by the State Medical Examiner showed Aliyanna’s death was the result of her head injuries and ruled the death a homicide.

Puckett is being held in the Mills County Jail on a bond of $1 million.
