Julie Coppola will still use her sprinkler system on her Des Moines lawn. But she wants everyone to know she's not trying to drain the water supply. Tuesday, the Des Moines Water Works asked customers to voluntarily reduce water use by 10% as the system deals with a summer-long drought. Coppola said she will actually cut hers 50% because she knows watering a big yard takes a lot of water. And she wants to do her part and then some.

Her prized Impatiens still get attention, though. She tried skipping a day of water for them and they started to wilt. She will let them go if the metro's water worries get worse. But she holds out hope enough of her neighbors will do their part to conserve. She said, "They just have to get the message. And why wouldn't they? Most people, yes, will totally help out."
