January is glaucoma awareness month.  More than 2.7-million Americans have glaucoma; a group of conditions that causes damage to the optic nerve.

Dr. Wendy Muller from Vision Park Family Eye Care said damage from glaucoma is typically caused by increased pressure inside the eye.  Muller said many people do not know they are living with glaucoma until they visit their eye doctor.

People who are at higher risk for contracting glaucoma are people ages 60-years-old and older, people with a long history of steroid use, people with diabetes and those with a family history of glaucoma.

For more information on glaucoma, visit the Vision Park Family Care at their offices in Urbandale or West Des Moines or on the Vision Park website here.
