WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The first Football Friday Big Game of the year features two of the state's top Class 4A teams.
No. 8-ranked Waukee will travel to No. 1-ranked Valley on Friday night in a key season opener.
“They (Waukee) border our district and they have outstanding athletics,” said Valley Head Coach Gary Swenson. “It creates a good rivalry and every year we know they are going to have good players, and every year we think we have good players. It’s always going to be a good game.”
Last year, Valley went 10-2 with both losses coming against Waukee, including one defeat in the quarterfinals. The Warriors finished 11-2 and reached the semifinals, before losing to Dowling.
Valley junior quarterback Rocky Lombardi, who has already obtained scholarship offers from Iowa State and Virginia, leads the Tigers heading into the highly-anticipated matchup.
"We're definitely excited, they've been circled on our calendar for a while," Lombardi said. "We're excited to get the chance to play them and go out and show them what we're made of."
Waukee will also lean on their quarterback, senior Ben Firken, after the Warriors lost a lot of talent from last year’s electric squad.
The game kicks off just after 7 p.m., and you can follow all of the Iowa high school football scores through our Friday night live scoreboard.
