DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Grand Blue Mile races officially started at about 6 p.m. Tuesday in downtown Des Moines.

A number of recreational runners, competitive runners and even mascots are competing in several races held on the one-mile path through downtown.

The evening started with the Iowa Kidstrong Fun Run and ends with Men's Invitational Championship at 7:30 p.m.

The route takes all the runners down Locust Street with a turn down 6th Avenue, before going back up Grand Avenue. The complicated route means plenty of roadblocks along the racing area.

John Sears joined the Channel 13 News at 6 p.m. with a live report from the Grand Blue Mile.
